Tool & Product Costing / Breakthrough in mould and die costing!

Tool Costing is a breakthrough – and independent – application which is an ideal solution for fast and precise tooling costing on the basis of 3D model of a moulded part (for injection moulds), a casting model (casting moulds) or a sheet metal part model for press tools. Complete tooling quotation is performed within 15-30 minutes depending on the complexity of the analysed model. Thanks to precise analyses based on 3D model, tool costing application allows to estimate tooling costs with high accuracy.

TOOL COSTING

Global markets and increasing pressure to reduce costs require professional cost management for moulds and tooling. The Tool Costing application – part of the PCM environment – comes to your aid.
PCM (Product Cost Management) is a tool for product costing. It enables quick determination of future product price, profitability, production volume, etc. The production costs of a product include both the materials necessary for production (e.g. granulate) and the production tools. Production tools can include injection moulds, multi-bar presses, etc.

Thanks to precise analyses, PCM allows, on the basis of a finished part, to estimate with high accuracy the costs of production tools. When quoting e.g. injection moulds, PCM analyses the workpiece and automatically detects part dimensions, wall thickness, number and size of ribs, slider locations, inserts, etc.
After analysis, the data is transferred to the costing environment. In this environment, you can determine, among other things, the production region, currency, mould multiples, type of injection channels, etc. Of course, the percentage of tool service costs (servicing) can also be determined. On the basis of the above information, PCM calculates and generates a material list, which determines the time of performing particular operations, e.g. hollowing time, milling time, time spent on preparing particular parts, etc.
PCM provides the user with dozens of diagrams showing the percentage of each operation. Thanks to this it is possible to determine very quickly whether it is better to order parts or make them in-house.

PCM also generates a cost breakdown at the end of the process which is very useful when negotiating with customers. Having an accurate picture of costs, it is possible to optimise them very quickly. Thanks to the possibility of changing any parameter of the quote, e.g. the country in which the tool will be performed, it is possible to make a competitive offer in a very clear way.
Benefits offered by the integrated cost calculation platform
The development of detailed cost knowledge and maximum transparency are necessary to achieve transparency in tooling cost management. The Tool Costing application provides:

  • reduction of time and effort needed to prepare cost statements
  • maintaining knowledge of costs within the company thanks to database-based calculations
  • stronger position in price negotiations with suppliers
  • better return on investment due to calculating tooling variants and changes
  • understanding the cost drivers and their impact on the cost of the overall tooling
  • better knowledge management for all principals and price analysts
  • support in cost structure negotiations and meetings (workshops) with instrumentation manufacturers and suppliers
  • reduced tooling expenditure and improved pricing efficiency
  • achieving target costs through detailed and verifiable analysis of the tooling cost

Tooling costing based on 3D design Tool Costing software allows parametric costing of tooling made with different technologies such as injection moulding, high pressure casting, multi-tactile stamping, laser cutting and others on the basis of a 3D model.

To proceed with the calculation, simply select the tooling technology and describe the part geometry. It is possible to carry out direct analysis and import 3D models directly from NX, CATIA, Pro/ENGINEER, MATERIALISE or from neutral exchange formats such as PARASOLID, IGES, STEP, STL or JT format.

Reference data for cost analysis
The Tool Costing software offers access to a wide range of reference data. Selecting profiles and locations from this database allows pre-configured data such as specifications, production techniques and hourly rates to be used. This information can also be configured to meet customer requirements. The result is a tooling quote with a high level of detail that allows the user flexibility in creating cost statements.

Relevant functionalities

The tooling costing software, Tool Costing, offers access to a wide collection of source data. Selecting profiles and locations from this source database allows pre-configured data such as specifications, production techniques and hourly rates to be used. This information can also be configured to meet customer requirements.

The result is a tooling quote with a high level of detail that allows the user flexibility in creating cost statements.

Key features of the solution:

  • parametric valuation method based on 3D design
  • flexible cost calculations and individual reports
  • company-wide knowledge management based on a database platform
  • Import and export of customised cost sheets
  • Reliable checking calculations
  • Support for all major tooling technologies: injection molding, casting, progressive stamping, laser cutting

Tool Costing software offers the unique ability to determine the cost interaction between tooling and component costs at different volumes, while ensuring the reliability and transparency of your tooling project. A combination of Tool Costing and Teamcenter software can be used to perform Product Costing, creating a fully integrated calculation solution.

In addition, tooling costs within the integrated solution are captured holistically in the project's bills of material and product programme. Cost changes can be automatically updated at product and project level.

Common platform for product and tooling costs
The quality and design of tooling not only affects tooling costs, but also the unit cost of manufactured parts. Optimised total cost estimation requires an overall assessment of part and tooling costs. In practice, most companies lack an integrated part and tooling costing system, making total cost evaluation often difficult or impossible.

Tool Costing Modules

This is a module for tooling costing, e.g., injection moulds and press tools. It enables performing quick and reliable valuations and clear cost statements. It allows to optimize expenditures on tooling and ensure better quality of suppliers' offer. As tooling becomes more complex and production batches become smaller, quotations are challenging even for experienced tooling specialists and only succeed with a highly efficient costing system that delivers faster, more accurate and more understandable results based on 3D models.
A series of standard visualisation functions in 3D tools, such as measurements and cross-sections, make it easy and fast to automatically identify numerous part features such as pockets, undercuts, acquisitions, ribs and more.

Product Costing
This product costing module enables manufacturing companies to have a detailed knowledge of their costs, provides maximum transparency for excellent product cost management. It provides a quick process for initial product costing, a uniform methodology for carrying out costing and includes a consistent database. Allows the assumption of the optimal selling price of a product through cost analysis based on a built-in knowledge base and generates reliable product pricing with a safe margin of error.

Tool Costing Synthetics

Tool Costing Synthetics allows to calculate the costs of different types of tooling occurring in the manufacturing processes of plastics and synthetics. The basic methodology is parametric reference calculations based on 3D part geometry.

Content Costing
The Content Costing module allows the user to access reference data that includes technical information on materials and machines, economic (cost) information on production plants (hourly rates, interest rates, office and production costs, energy costs, etc.) and machines (acquisition values, maintenance rates, energy consumption, etc.).

Magics CalCard
This optional software supports the definition of part geometry for Tool Costing Magics CalCard Interface package NX, CATIA, Pro/E. Includes the ability to start Magics CalCard directly from NX, CATIA and Pro/E files.

Product Costing – Calculation
The module allows the user to price a product in the system, which uses a calculation methodology based on the bottom-up approach. This method is based on a detailed product structure and determines the use of material costs.
