ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING with NX

NX CAD/CAE/CAM is a comprehensive design, simulation and production platform which enables you to combine special modeling functions and the design and topology optimization possibilities, which, in turn, makes it possible to develop breakthrough designs based on additive technologies

Support of the Full Range of Technologies
The new class parts are prepared and 3D printed with the use of Additive Manufacturing technology, including Powder Bed Fusion and Jet Fusion (both supported by Materialise), Hybrid Additive and Fused Deposition Modeling along with Nesting 3D and Lattice Structure (3D mesh).

Workflow to reshape conventionally designed parts
The design and performance parameters of NX are optimized which provides designers and engineers with a wide range of possibilities to develop new generation products. The breakthrough technology allows designers to quickly create innovative and uniformly shaped parts which have better performance parameters, which meet specific industrial requirements and are efficiently printable in the 3D technology.

Convergent Modeling Technology
From an engineer's point of view, it is an innovative technology which significantly simplifies the work done on the geometry consisting of faces (STL) surfaces and solids. This innovative design method helps engineers optimize the part design process with regard to the 3D printability and accelerate the entire process.

Scan-to-print
Convergent Modeling enables users to immediately start using the scanned data to design products. Convergent modeling and the possibility to make parts by printing them in 3D technology directly from NX simplifies the additive manufacturing process. The new process including scanning, editing and printing supports the 3D three-dimensional production format (3MF) and the 3D printing functions by Microsoft.

Topology Optimization
NX allows designers and engineers to create and optimize a completely new generation of products since the performance requirements are taken into consideration from the very beginning. The resultant shapes are lightweight and meet all performance requirements in an optimized way.

These breakthrough designs are easily modifiable in the NX system by means of advanced functionalities such as Convergent Modeling and synchronous technology, which form a uniform and complete environment for the design of components to be made by means of the additive method.

Principles of Design for 3D Printing
The key stage of the process is to validate designs to be 3D printed. NX offers validation tools used to carry out necessary checks:

  • Define the minimum wall thickness to make the part printable.
  • The overhang angle allows to identify these regions of the part which must be supported
  • The entirely closed spaces may be identified to ensure that these areas can be efficiently machined when printed
  • The printed volume function calculates if the part fits the printing space of the printer.
    These validation tools aid data preparation and ensure that the designed parts are printable.


Printing Preparation
NX carries out the entire 3D printing process by providing solutions for a wide range of additive methods used both for plastic and metal parts. The optimized product models from the design and simulation stage can be quickly prepared to be 3D printed.

Printing Operation Set Up
NX helps engineers plan the way in which parts are nested and define necessary supports to prepare the 3D printing settings. New NX solutions allow the executive configuration to be quickly loaded and the printed parts to be easily positioned by means of the advanced capabilities.

Nesting of Parts – 2D and 3D Nesting
The optimized nesting of multiple parts can significantly increase the additive manufacturing efficiency. Metal parts can be quickly positioned and arranged by means of interactive combining tools. The way in which parts are arranged can minimize the extent to which supports are necessary, thus making it possible to reduce the extent to which the printed parts must be finished.

Creating Supporting Structures (Supports)
The stage in which supports for metal parts manufactured by means of the powder bed fusion are made is necessary but it can be  complicated and time-consuming. NX allows to automatically generate the geometry of supports (supported by Materialise technology) while keeping ties with the design model.

The full associativity ensures automatic updates of supporting structures in case of successive engineering changes of the design. The user can freely set up the geometry of the supports, for example, to use perforated walls to speed up the printing and improve the quality of parts.

Printer Control Code Generation
3D printers require a specific set of parameters to effectively carry out the additive manufacturing process.

NX supports a wide range of 3D printers for printing both plastic and metal parts. Predefined parameters can be used to create adequate printing processes for a specific 3D printer, material and printing strategy. To validate the additive manufacturing process, you can review the current laser path "layer by layer" before it is sent to the printer.

Powder bed 3D printing
The new class parts are prepared and 3D printed with the use of Additive Manufacturing technology, including Powder Bed Fusion and Jet Fusion (both supported by Materialise), Hybrid Additive and Fused Deposition Modeling along with Nesting 3D and Lattice Structure (3D mesh).
NX has special software suites to support:

  • Powder bed fusion 2.5-axis printing
  • HP Multi Jet Fusion technology
  • Hybrid-additive manufacturing with multi-axis fused deposition (DMG MORI)

NX MACH 3 Additive Design with Convergent
Mach 3 Additive Design with Convergent includes all design capabilities of Mach 3 Product Design, as well as added functionality for designing parts that will use additive manufacturing processes. This includes advanced Convergent Modeling functions for working with polygon models as well as specific additive manufacturing functionality.

NX Additive Design with Convergent Sticky Add-on
The NX Additive Design with Convergent Sticky Add-on includes functionality for designing parts that are suitable for being produced using additive manufacturing methods

NX AM Fixed-Plane Basic
This includes powder bed systems and fixed-axis extrusion systems. It provides build tray setup, basic support geometry creation, and the build processor framework, which supports build processors for a wide variety of Additive Manufacturing equipment. This bundle includes solid modeling and drafting, feature modeling, basic freeform modeling, assembly modeling, and user defined features.

NX AM for Multi Jet Fusion
This is a manufacturing authoring application for Multi Jet Fusion Powder Bed Additive Manufacturing systems. It provides build tray setup, basic 3D nesting, and the build processor framework. This package provides a build processor for the HP Multi Jet Fusion system. This bundle includes solid modeling and drafting, feature modeling, basic freeform modeling, assembly modeling, and user defined features.

NX AM Fixed-Plane Advanced
This is a manufacturing authoring application for fixed plane Additive Manufacturing. This includes powder bed systems and fixed-axis extrusion systems. It provides build tray setup, advanced support geometry creation, 3D nesting, and the build processor framework, which supports build processors for a wide variety of Additive Manufacturing equipment. This bundle includes solid modeling and drafting, feature modeling, basic freeform modeling, assembly modeling, and user defined features.

The NX CAD/CAM test version offers free tests of NX software which cover selected NX CAD, NX CAM and NX CAE suites or specialized NX Mold/Progressive Design type applications (design of molds and dies).

The offer is addressed to prospective customers who are interested in these solutions or wish to compare NX capabilities against the solutions which are currently being used, as well as companies already using NX software.
